Practical matters and specific intentions on how to collectively overcome solid household waste (SWW) in the Lviv agglomeration were discussed at the Ecology Committee. The Association is working to develop a waste management plan common to the merged communities. The combined waste control scheme – at the same time complex and simple in its nodal solutions – may become one of the first in Ukraine and the basis for other agglomerations. In particular, it was about control over MSW in accordance with the National Waste Management Plan adopted in December. It provides for the following principles regarding garbage:
collection,
removal,
recovery,
disposal.
All this can be organized in the Lviv agglomeration. After all, a powerful waste processing plant in Lviv should soon be operational (by the end of the year). It can process 250 thousand tons of waste per year – that is, waste from Lviv and all communities of the agglomeration. In addition, the almost unique case of the Hrybovychi landfill in Ukraine, which has already been almost completely recultivated, inspires us to ecologically rethink many parameters in communities.
By the way, unfortunately, we had to talk about natural landfills – this is a problem for many communities. For example, waste recently piled up on the road to Myklashiv. It’s a shame, but the local community had to spend such necessary funds to remove the trash… To reduce this, environmental officials of the Lviv agglomeration want to work out joint solutions to almost all the difficulties we have with solid waste.
Unfortunately, some of the environmental and waste problems cannot be solved by the communities themselves. Therefore, the Lviv agglomeration will address legislative and other initiatives to people’s deputies and central government bodies. Of course, advanced world and, above all, European experience will also be used. After all, thanks to the Council of Europe program, community representatives have already been able to get acquainted with waste control in the Czech Republic.
