Ecology in Action: How Over 350 Schoolchildren from Lviv Agglomeration Learned Waste Management
Modern education has long expanded beyond the boundaries of traditional classrooms. When it comes to developing eco-friendly habits, theory without practice is ineffective. This was the guiding principle behind organizing a series of interactive eco-excursions that brought together over 350 schoolchildren from the Lviv Agglomeration over the course of a week.
The students visited an educational eco-space at the municipal enterprise LKP “TF Lvivspetskomuntrans”. There, they witnessed firsthand what happens to household waste after it enters a bin and discovered why proper sorting is not just a trend, but a vital necessity for every community.
For most of the children, visiting a municipal enterprise was a true eye-opener.
The students learned about:
Specialized Machinery Operations: The children saw how modern garbage trucks and equipment help maintain cleanliness in cities and villages.
Waste Logistics: Students were shown waste transfer stations and learned about the journey of waste from the bin through the stages of sorting, recycling, or safe disposal.
The Value of Human Labor: The teenagers realized how crucial and demanding the daily work of individuals who maintain the ecological balance in our communities truly is.
“It was incredibly interesting to see how waste goes through different stages of recycling and gets a ‘second life’. We were particularly impressed by the modern equipment, the eco-center, and just how important this work is for nature conservation,” shared young visitors from the Novyi Yarychiv community.
The key feature of these events was their training and game-based format. Schoolchildren learned to flawlessly separate plastic, paper, glass, and organic waste, and discovered how to properly handle hazardous household waste.
A themed eco-quiz generated the most excitement and energy among the students. The children demonstrated excellent resourcefulness, team spirit, and a deep understanding of ecological culture. The most active participants received useful gifts, while the educators were presented with pleasant souvenirs as keepsakes.
The main value of this experience is that these children will now become eco-ambassadors in their schools and families, spreading the culture of proper sorting among parents and friends.
This large-scale educational campaign was made possible through the synergy of local self-government, municipal enterprises, and international institutions. The eco-excursions were initiated by the Association “Lviv Agglomeration” as part of the Project “Together for Better Services: Inter-Municipal Cooperation in Lviv Agglomeration”. This project is implemented under a Grant Agreement with the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine as a component of the project “Strengthening Multilevel Governance and Local Democracy for Supporting Ukraine’s Recovery”. It is executed within the framework of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine “Resilience, Recovery and Reconstruction” for 2023–2026 by the Centre of Expertise for Multilevel Governance at the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.
“Such initiatives are of paramount importance for raising a new generation of conscious citizens. It is through practical experience that children better understand how their community functions, why it is essential to care for the environment, and how even small daily actions can have a massive positive impact. These excursions serve as a prime example of how inter-municipal cooperation and partnerships among communities, educational institutions, and municipal enterprises can shape modern environmental education,” emphasized the Project Manager.
