Together toward a sustainable future: The Association “Lviv Agglomeration” has become an official participant of the international platform PREVENT Waste Alliance. This opens up new opportunities for the 13 member communities of the Association in the field of waste management and the transition to a circular economy.
Today, waste management is not merely a municipal challenge but a global issue of survival and environmental security. Recognizing this, the Lviv Agglomeration has joined the PREVENT Waste Alliance, an international alliance initiated by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
What is the PREVENT Waste Alliance? It is a powerful network that brings together more than 600 organizations from around the world: from government institutions and municipalities to research centers, public sector, and private businesses. The main goal of the Alliance is to minimize waste generation, eliminate pollutants, and maximize resource reuse worldwide.
Why is this important for the communities of the Lviv Agglomeration? Joining the Alliance is not merely formal membership but access to tools that will help make our communities cleaner and more efficient:
1. International expertise and experience: Our specialists gain access to the “knowledge garden” — the world’s best practices in managing plastic, electronic, and organic waste.
2. Partnerships and investments: The platform enables identifying partners for joint environmental projects and applying for grant programs and innovative pilots funded by the Alliance.
3. Development of common standards: We will be able to join thematic working groups (for example, on plastics or extended producer responsibility) to implement modern European approaches at the level of our territorial communities.
4. Resilience of communities: In the context of war and recovery, building a sustainable waste management system is critically important for the institutional capacity of local self-government.
What’s next? In the near future, representatives of the Association will take part in meetings of the Alliance’s working groups, where they will represent the needs of our communities and start working on joint initiatives.
The Association “Lviv Agglomeration” is already implementing the project “Together for Better Services: Intermunicipal Cooperation in the Lviv Agglomeration”, funded by the Council of Europe. Within this project, a particular focus is placed on municipal solid waste management. This is fundamentally important to us, as effective waste management is impossible within a single community — it requires joint planning, coordinated decisions, and intermunicipal coordination. The project enables communities to jointly develop practical models of cooperation, improve service quality, and reduce the environmental burden on the territory of the agglomeration.
In this context, cooperation with PREVENT Waste Alliance is extremely relevant and timely. The international expertise of the Alliance complements our practical work at the local level, making it possible to combine day-to-day management decisions with a long-term vision of the transition to a circular economy. Such synergy strengthens the capacity of Lviv Agglomeration communities to implement modern approaches to waste management and turns intermunicipal cooperation into a real instrument of sustainable development.
We are confident: a clean environment begins with effective collaboration. Moving towards a circular future together!
