The first written mention of Kulykiv dates back to the end of the 14th century. In 1399, the Galician Latin archbishop issued an act on the consolidation of the land allotment behind the Kulykiv church. Interestingly, in the 15th century, the village had a parallel name, Boshch or Bozhch. It would be more correct to say Bozhich, which comes from the name of an ancient Slavic cult. In West Slavic mythology, the cult of Bozhich as the son of God was celebrated at the beginning of the new year. Such festivals were probably held on the mountain where Kulykiv later grew up. The settlement of Bozhich may also refer to the legendary prince Antiv Bozh of the “Buzhan” tribe, who lived in these lands.
You can learn more about this in the museum “Kulykiv and Kulykivshchyna”. In particular, you can visit the museum room of Bohdan Stupka, a world-famous Ukrainian actor.
