The Lviv Agglomeration has become a platform for international academic cooperation. This week, a meeting was held involving representatives of the Washington Metropolitan Area, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv , and the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area.
The Lviv Agglomeration served as a venue for a strategic dialogue between these key stakeholders. The meeting was dedicated to finding joint solutions for the development of academic and managerial leadership, international cooperation, and strengthening the institutional capacity of universities and public institutions amidst transformations and crises.
The discussion focused on the role of universities as drivers of change, the necessity of updating leadership approaches in science and governance, and the vital importance of partnerships between the academic community, local self-government, and international networks.

“Leadership School” as a Tool for Sustainable Academic Development
During the meeting, Oksana Molderf, Head of the International Cooperation Center at IFNUL, presented the concept of a “Leadership School” for young researchers and administrative staff. The university plans to develop this initiative in collaboration with the international consortium.
The proposed initiative builds on the successful implementation of similar programs in 2019 and 2021–2022, aiming to update and adapt them to modern challenges while scaling them with the support of international partners. External expert and methodological support from the international consortium will be essential for the program’s relaunch.
Key features of the “Leadership School”:
- Target Audience: Young researchers and administrative/managerial staff.
- Format: 4–6 educational modules combining workshops, lectures, and peer learning.
- Core Topics: Leadership, change management, research and team management, communication, innovation, internationalization, and mentorship.
The program aims to establish a sustainable system for leadership renewal, develop managerial competencies, increase the institutional resilience of universities, and strengthen their role within the international academic space.
The Role of Lviv Agglomeration: From Dialogue to a Cooperation Platform
A significant outcome of the meeting was the Lviv Agglomeration’s role as a platform for fostering further cooperation between IFNUL and the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area. The Agglomeration provided the space for inter-institutional dialogue, bridging the gap between the academic community, international partners, and metropolitan-level governance.
This format of cooperation aligns with the strategic vision of the Lviv Agglomeration as an institution that:
- Promotes the integration of education, science, and public administration;
- Supports human capital development at the regional level;
- Creates conditions for international partnerships and knowledge transfer.
The meeting with representatives of the Washington Metropolitan Area and the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area confirmed a high level of interest in collaborating with Ukrainian institutions and a readiness to work on programs with a long-term impact. The ideas discussed laid the groundwork for future joint steps—ranging from refining the Leadership School concept to forming partnership projects in education, science, and governance.
The Lviv Agglomeration will continue to develop its role as a hub for international cooperation, supporting initiatives that strengthen the institutional capacity of communities, universities, and the region as a whole.
